FAQ
Q: Mount Materials. What materials are your mounts made from?
A: MadMounts uses only industrial grade filaments for all mounts. Most are available in polycarbonate and carbon fiber nylon options. Functionally, the mounts will perform the same, but the carbon fiber nylon upgrade is lighter and stiffer. The finish is also more brilliant and reproduces customization (logos, sail numbers, boat names, etc.) more precisely.
Q: Case Materials. What material are your cases made from?
A: MadMounts uses only industrial grade filaments for all cases. They are solid polyurethane with the exception of the “cushion corners, “ which are striated, This design element creates a spring action in each corner to help absorb the impact of accidental drops. Other materials, such as what we use in our mounts, are too rigid to provide force-absorbing protection.
Q: Production Locations. Where do you produce your products?
A: In both North America and Europe, to enable MadMounts to efficiently service sailors worldwide; and to eliminate or minimize VAT and shipping expenses.
Q: Protection. Do I really need a Protective Case and a Screen Saver?
A: Maybe not, if you’ve never cracked a mobile phone screen. (Is there anyone who has never done that?) But if you’re like the rest of us, $60 (USD) is pretty cheap insurance for a computer that’s not repairable. Vakaros makes a tough product, but these units are not indestructible. The question to ask, is whether it’s worth the risk?
Q: Drilling Mounts. Can I drill holes in my mount?
A: Not a good idea. The orientation of the filament during printing provides the strength in the mount. Drilling holes can disrupt the structural integrity of the mount, making it more vulnerable to breakage.
Q: Optics. Does the Screen Saver negatively affect the optics of the computer?
A: No. Once installed, you won’t even be able to tell that the tempered glass is there. The glass is low glare and designed to work with polarized sunglasses.
Q: Button Operation. Will I still be able to easily operate the computer’s buttons?
A: Yes, the glass is thin, but very strong. A laser is used to create precise cutouts for all the buttons. With the Screen Saver installed, you will not experience any difference in button operation.
Q: Customization. Should I get my Protective Case customized?
A: Damn straight! You know your mate will think your computer is his or hers when you’re telling stories at the bar. Limited to a maximum of 11 characters on each side.
Q: Carbon. Why are certain mounts only available in polycarbonate?
A: Using carbon in a mount which fully encases the unit (i.e., Foil/Board Mount, Standard Catamaran Mount) can hinder the GPS antenna in the computer. This would not be an issue for the performance of individual units. However, in regattas using Race Sense, the carbon could compromise race management.
Q: Care. How should I care for my case and mount.
A: Just rinse them off regularly with fresh water, if you sail in sail water. Don't allow salt to build up between your computer and its case, as this could affect the operation of your computer.
Q: Installation. How do I install the glass and case?
A: It's simple and fast. Instructions included, or watch the installation video located in our Protection Bundle, Protective Case or Screen Saver product sections.
